Arystan Bab Mausoleum Otrar, Kazakhstan

Kazakh Muslims regard the 11th century mosque named after Arystan Bab as the holy of holies in Kazakhstan. This Muslim cleric lived in Otrar in southern Kazakhstan during the 11th century and is credited with the peaceful spread of Islam, and through it, of the Arabic language and alphabet. He was the teacher of Hodja Akhmed Yasavi. Pilgrims to Turkestan first stop at the arystan Bab Mausoleum.
