6th century B.C. Balbal found near Taraz depicts the goddess Umay, protectressof Mothers and Fertility. Balbal scuptues served a variety of purposes including memorials at grave sites, deification of ancestors, mounuments to honor a defeated enemy or tribal boundary maerkers.
